Hyder Edward Rollins (1889-1958) was born in Abilene, Texas. In 1910 he received a B.A. from Southwestern University, an M.A. from the University of Texas in 1912, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1917. In 1919 he went to Europe on a Harvard Sheldon Traveling Fellowship and in 1920 he was appointed assistant professor at New York University, becoming a full professor four years later. Gertrude P. Rawson (Mrs. Philip N. Rawson, Swarthmore B.A. 1924) submitted this thesis for the B.Litt degree at Oxford University in 1929 and it was rejected due to "some bibliographical imperfections in the third appendix." She offered it in 1930 to Harvard Professor Hyder Rollins, who accepted it for the library's collection of manuscripts on English ballads.
